Today, I will be talking about how we can get fresh content ideas for email marketing.
If you have an email list, I am sure you have had days where you are tearing your hair out because you do not know what to email your subscribers that week.
I have completed many email marketing courses and many business coaches recommend emailing your list everyday. Or at least commit to emailing 3 times a week.
To be honest, it is very challenging for me to email everyday. I have a list of about 9000 subscribers right now. Most of them are coaches. And it is difficult for me to think of value-filled emails everyday. So I personally only email about twice a week. That is because I like to email quality content and it takes much time for me to come up with high-quality and helpful content for my audience of coaches.
If you have a team to help you with email marketing, of course, emailing 5 times a week is more achievable for you. But if you are a solopreneur like I am, it takes energy and effort for us to write high-quality emails.
Nevertheless, through my experience, I have observed that there are 5 ways for you to get fresh content ideas for your subscribers so that you can stay consistent with email marketing.
Strategy one is to consume other people’s content.
I’m referring to reading books, listening to audio books, listening to podcasts and watching online courses.
You can get so much insight, ‘aha’ moments and ideas when you consume valuable content everyday. What I recommend you to do is to take note of any useful information that you come across and add your own experience or your own opinions or your observations.
This will give that piece of content a personal touch and makes it unique. Definitely do not copy other people’s content! But take the valuable info from audio books or podcasts and add your own experience and observations to it. Be confident of your own opinions :)
Strategy 2 is to share any observations and changes you have made in yourself.
If you have recently adopted a 6am morning routine and found it helpful, share it with your audience in your emails. If you have recently started exercising in the mornings and notice that it makes you very motivated, share that too.
If you have friends who are very positive-minded, observe how they think, observe how they handle problems and observe what they do to bounce back after a setback. These observations can serve as content in your email newsletters.
I personally like to do my work at cafes and even relax at cafes when I have free time. I will tune in to my surroundings and observe the people around me or I will eavesdrop on some conversations.
Observing people around you can uncover so much insight about human behaviour. All these observations can be content ideas for you.
Strategy number 3 is to re-use your past content.
For me, I like to write fresh content and fresh emails every week. I like writing, observing and sharing, hence it comes relatively easy for me.
However, I understand that not everyone can write fresh content every time they turn on their laptops. I think this strategy works best if you are going on a long vacation and you want to batch-write or write 5 emails and schedule them out.
What you can do, is to look at your courses, your past YouTube videos, your past IG ‘lives’ or even your past emails. You can extract a small section and write emails about it.
I know of mega business gurus who advocate for business owners to re-use their old emails. According to these coaches, people do not remember what you emailed them 6 months ago.
Hence, these business gurus mentioned that it is alright to reuse your old emails. If you are doing this, I would suggest that you change your email subject line at least, and even tweak certain parts of the email before reusing it so that it seems ‘new’.
I am on the email list of some 7-figure coaches and I notice that some of them do reuse their emails. One of these big-name coaches will reuse the same emails whenever she is launching discounts for her courses. She does not even change the email subject lines, so that is how I notice her repeated emails! :D
So if you are in a time-crunch, reusing your old emails is an option for you.
Strategy number 4 is to use email templates.
When I was first starting out in business 3 years ago, I bought a pack of email templates and I used them quite often.
I also subscribed to a $9 per month email marketing membership to constantly get new ideas and new email templates to email my audience. (For full transparency, the two links I share above are affiliate links. )
These were very useful when I was new or when I was desperate for email ideas. I am more confident in writing my own emails now, so I don’t use templates anymore. But I understand that email templates and ideas can be very useful if you are someone who does not like writing or finds writing a chore.
Strategy 5 to stay consistent in email marketing is to create one main piece of content every week.
This main piece of content can be a blog post, a podcast episode or a YouTube video every week. It sounds like a lot of work and it is! If you create one blog post, podcast episode or video every week, you can reuse the content in your emails.
You can write a shortened version of the blog post, podcast or video in your email newsletters.
You can even send a separate email to your subscribers to promote your new podcast episode or blog post and that counts as one email.
If you create one major piece of content every week, it can serve as the main focal point for your email marketing for that week.
